Women Lawyers Section Charitable Projects 2008 - 2009

Every year the Women Lawyers Section sponsors numerous charitable activities.  Below are some of the highlights from 2008 and 2009.

  • The WLS held a professional clothing drive for My Sister’s Closet from March 5 through March 31, 2008.  My Sister’s Closet is a charity that distributes professional clothing and accessories to women who are trying to enter the work force.

  • The WLS participated as a sponsor of the Women’s Fund’s "Voices Against Violence" Giving Campaign which raises funds that are used to eliminate domestic violence in our community.

  • The Section participated in the Birmingham Bar Association Servis Juris Day on June 14, 2008 and cleaned and organized My Sister’s Closet shop and built shelving for storage.

  • The Section provided school uniforms to children in DHR custody.

  • The Section donated books and storage cubes to Family Courts’ Children’s Area.  We continue to monitor the area and will add additional books as needed.  For this project, our Section became a recipient of the National Conference of Women’s Bar Associations’ Public Service Award.  The Awards will be presented on Friday, July 31, 2009 in Chicago, Illinois.

  • On October 11, 2008, the WLS participated in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure by sponsoring a team that raised over $1,000.

  • Through a grant from section member Carol Ann Smith, the Section took two groups of underprivileged children to a Red Mountain Theater holiday production.  The Section provided for photographs to be made with Santa and provided snacks prior to the performance.

  • The Section provided toys and donations for the YWCA Santa’s Workshop and provided breakfast for parent participating in the event.

  • The WLS and Birmingham Bar Foundation raised approximately $4,519 at a wine tasting held on February 26, 2009 to purchase Bunny Bags for children of domestic violence.  The bags were designed by the American Bar Association and contain items of information and comfort for children who are the victims of domestic violence.

  • The Section made a contribution in April 2009 to the YWCA Purse and Passion fundraiser which supports essential services of the YWCA.
