WHAT IS THE LAWYER REFERRAL SERVICE?

The BBA Lawyer Referral Service is available for people in the Birmingham metropolitan area who need legal assistance and can afford the services of an attorney. BBA Members who practice in the Birmingham metropolitan area may join the panel and are referred to potential clients on a rotating basis. Callers to the referral line are notified prior to receiving a referral that the lawyers on the panel do not offer pro bono or reduced-fee services and may charge an initial consultation fee.  All fees, including any initial consultation fee, are negotiated by the referred attorney and prospective client.  Neither the attorney nor the potential client is under any obligation to move forward with the matter after the initial contact.

The Lawyer Referral Service is not a Pro Bono plan, as this is a service for those who do not know or have an attorney, but who have the ability to pay attorney fees. The staff for the Lawyer Referral Service takes steps to inform callers about potential attorney fees; however, it does not guarantee a client’s ability to pay.  Historically, the Birmingham Bar Association has referred between 3,000 and 5,000 clients per year, and many attorneys have belonged to the Service for more than 20 years with positive results.  Download the 2014 Lawyer Referral Service Rules and Regulations HERE.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

The fee to join the Lawyer Referral Service is $150 per year. The program begins each January and fees are not pro-rated if a member joins during the course of the year, unless the beginning and ending dates of the program term should change.
