Where did you go to school?
Washington & Lee University (B.A., B.S); Samford University (M.T.S.); University of Virginia (J.D.)
How long have you been practicing law?
How have you been involved in the Birmingham Bar Association?
My involvement with the Birmingham Bar Association began years ago with the Young Lawyers Section, but my current work as a section chair is the most significant involvement I have had, and I am really enjoying it. I would encourage members who aren’t involved to connect in some way. No matter how you become involved with the Birmingham Bar Association, you’ll have a great opportunity to meet and work with lawyers you would not otherwise get to know and to participate in the life of the Birmingham area legal community in new ways. "Business lawyers" often don't have as much opportunity as lawyers in other practice areas to meet and work with the broader legal community, so the new Business Law Section can provide an avenue for wider interactions for those of us that don't spend much time in the courthouses.
What do you like most about the Birmingham Bar Association?
I continue to be impressed by the number of ways the Birmingham Bar Association promotes collegiality and integrity across its membership and is a resource for its members. What I like most about the Birmingham Bar Association, however, is the way it encourages and organizes the work that the local legal community can do to support the community at large.
What is the most rewarding experience in your practice of law?
Almost all of my work is with individuals or families, and is based on their needs and issues concerning trusts and estates. It is extremely rewarding to have the opportunity to meet each of them in whatever situation they bring and to help them work through the range of legal issues that may be involved.
What makes you proud to be a lawyer?
I am proud to be a lawyer when I learn, day in and day out, of the care and compassion which so many of my colleagues in this legal community, across all practice areas, quietly and consistently bring to their vocations as they go about their work with their clients and with other lawyers.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
I could never be a sole practitioner without the support of my wife Carolyn, and the patience and understanding of our three teenage daughters.
