FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Birmingham, AL - August, 2005 - The Young Lawyers'
Section (YLS) of the Birmingham Bar Association and Workplay
have teamed together to benefit the children of the State of Alabama by
sponsoring a CD project to raise money for AMSTEC, the Alabama Mathematics,
Science and Technology Education Coalition.
"A compilation CD will go on sale to the public in
November 2005, with proceeds to benefit AMSTEC," explained Jenna M. Bedsole,
YLS President. The CD will feature
exclusive live tracks recorded at Workplay. "We are
excited about partnering with the YLS on this worthwhile project," said Jason
Parkman at Workplay.
"Alabama students score below average on national
tests and AMSTEC seeks to help all K-12 students develop the math, science and
technology skills necessary to succeed in post-secondary studies and in the
work force," explained Dr. Charles Nash with the University of Alabama System
and AMSTEC. AMSTEC supports and provides
advocacy for AMSTI, the Alabama Mathematics, Science, and Technology Initiative. AMSTI provides
supplies, equipment and technology to schools and also trains classroom
teachers in the use of proven instructional methods to help them better assess
student progress. In addition, AMSTI provides
ongoing classroom support to the teachers.
Early evaluation results indicate that students participating in AMSTI
instruction perform significantly better on standardized measures than
non-AMSTI students.
The Young Lawyers' Section of the Birmingham Bar
Association is comprised of over 650 members and is committed to bettering the
Birmingham community. In 2004, YLS
raised over $30,000.00 for Birmingham charities. YLS exists to provide a forum for the younger
members of the Bar to address mutual concerns and
issues. Its members are ages 36 and
younger or have been admitted to the Alabama Bar for three years or less.
Workplay, on Birmingham's Southside, is a multi-media complex,
home to two recording studios, sound stage, theatre and offices. It is an intimate venue, featuring live
performances, films, concerts and more. Workplay also has a bar which is open to the public. Workplay has become
a regular showcase for alternative bands and singer-songwriters.
The CD will feature exclusive live tracks from Vanessa
Carlton, Blue Merle, The Pierces, Josh Rouse, Ben Lee, Maria Taylor, John P.
Strohm, Lucy Kaplansky, Okkervil
River, Kyle Andrews, Glen Phillips and JackOPierce.
The CDs will be on sale in November of 2005 and may be
purchased at any Rave Motion Picture location or at Workplay,
500 23rd Avenue South. CDs
may be purchased on-line on the Birmingham Bar Website at www.birminghambar.org. Special thanks goes
