Workplay
- Young Lawyers' Section of the Birmingham Bar
CD/DVD
Project
CD/DVD Project:
The
Workplay Theatre ("Workplay") and YLS are pleased to announce their
partnership on CD/DVD project to be released in the fall of 2005. The
compilation CD will feature exclusive live tracks recorded live at Workplay and
the DVD will include live performance and interview footage with the acts on
the CD. All proceeds of the CD/DVD
project will benefit the children of the State of Alabama through AMSTEC and
help prepare them for the technological demands of the 21st
century.
Birmingham
has proven to be a remarkably strong market for charity compilation CDs that in
turn also raise artist awareness. For
example, the local commercial radio-sponsored Live in the X Lounge CD,
which features a roster of established and up-and-coming alternative rock acts,
raises up to $1,000,000.00 each year for United Cerebral Palsy. This project
and others have helped spring board new artists to a higher profile and capture
increased sales for the artist in this market while also helping a charitable
cause.
The Charity: (www.AMSTEC.org) Alabama Math, Science, Technology Coalition
Business
and education leaders from across the nation recognize that math, science, and
technology skills are crucial for preparing the nation to compete in the 21st
century. Currently, students in the
United States score average to below average on international tests of math and
science. Alabama students score below
average on national tests.
Modeled
after the highly acclaimed Alabama Reading Initiative, AMSTEC seeks to help all
students in Grades K-12 develop the math, science, and technology skills
necessary for post-secondary studies and the work force. AMSTEC will provide much needed materials,
equipment, technology and supplies to the schools. AMSTEC will also provide classroom teachers with extensive
training to strengthen the knowledge of teachers, train them in the use of
proven instructional methods, and help them better assess student
progress. In addition, AMSTEC will
provide ongoing support to the teachers.
This three pronged approach will ensure Alabama students will have
access to the materials, resources, and quality of instruction regardless of
location or socioeconomic background.
The Administrators:
Young Lawyers' Section of the Birmingham Bar
The Young
Lawyers' Section of the Birmingham Bar ("YLS") has over 650 members
and exists to provide a forum for the younger members of the bar to address
mutual concerns and issues. Its
members are ages 36 and younger or have been admitted to the Alabama bar for
three or fewer years. One of the YLS's
greatest strengths is its commitment to the Birmingham community. Every year, the Section organizes several
fundraisers, including a 5K race and a golf tournament. Last year, three Birmingham charities
received $30,000.00 fromYLS.
The Facility:
Workplay,
which is both an intimate showcase venue and a multi-media facility featuring a
state-of-the-art recording studio, has become a regular stop for alternative
bands and singer-songwriters on the verge of mainstream commercial
success. As such, Workplay is in a
unique position to document these acts before they become household names.
